Senior Tyler Murphy took a pass from senior Cam Aleksa with two minutes left and fired it home to give Methuen a 2-1 season-opening win over North Reading.
Aleksa, who transferred in from Central Catholic, and sophomore forward Ryan Bradley then did a fine job forechecking to help Methuen run out the clock.
Cam Conway stopped 16 Hornet shots.
"We were very happy with Cam today," said coach Denny Egan.
The Rangers opened the scoring on a Jordan Blatti goal at 7:03 of the first. North Reading's Mike Brandano netted the equalizer a minute later.
T.J. Gannon, a junior tri-captain, led the Ranger blueliners. Sophomore defensemen Brandon Karmelowitz, Dylan Yameen and Dale Armstrong also had fine games.
"Its always nice to open with a win, so we'll take it," said Egan.
