METHUEN — Embracing their 21-0 lead, Central Catholic took its own sweet time returning from the halftime intermission. An angry bunch of Methuen Rangers took exception to it and let the Raiders know it.

It's good to see that even with both teams struggling through tough campaigns, the Central-Methuen rivalry remains slightly below the boiling point.

"I love this, this rivalry's insane, it really is," said Raider senior offensive line captain Christian Nunez of Methuen. "I was hurt my sophomore and junior year. It feels great great to come in and beat them. Central-Methuen is always going to be a big thing. They were all riled up. We ended up taking it."

In this Central 35-20 blowout win, it was a Merrimac, Ma., product who dominated. Raider QB Matt McDermott ran for a pair of scores and threw TD passes to Ryan Doherty, Anthony Terranova and John Bilsky, pushing the Central mark to 4-5.

The Raiders can finish the year above .500, but will have their work cut out for them, facing Billerica this week and closing with the Thanksgiving clash against Andover.

McDermott, who ran for 157 yards, had to be that explosive as his Ranger counterpart, Eric Lacroix found room to operate against the Central secondary.

Both QBs surpassed the 1,000-yard passing plateau for the season. Lacroix's 14 of 35, 270-yard effort gave the senior 1,251 on the year, while McDermott hit 7 of 12 for 89 yards and now stands at 1,070.

Central carried the first half, outgaining the Rangers 227-116 and cashing in when it counted for three scores.
McDermott first hit Bilsky on an 11-yard hookup across the field. Early in the second, he found a wide-open Doherty alone to waltz into the end zone from 29 out, and he closed out the scoring with a 17-yard scramble for the 21-0 lead.

"Everyone just did their job," said the co-captain Nunez. "We just got on our blocks and we drove down the field."

Methuen just never made a game of it.

Lacroix hung tough under siege most of the night but ran for a pair of TDs and threw a third to Corey Shepherd.

"As a senior, captain, I want my team to have a winning record," said Nunez, who had two cousins and many friends on the Ranger squad. "It's an accomplishment we're looking for. If we can't win the MVC, we should at least have our pride."
