Success is no stranger to the Gloucester cheerleading squad. The 19 member co-ed squad is looking to build on the success from last school year, when the team won the state championship in the winter and fall seasons to go along with two Northeastern Conference titles. They also finished in second place at the National Championship.

Gloucester has also found plenty of success prior to last season. They have won 10 Northeastern Conference titles in eight years. Better yet, they have won eight state championships and two national championships in the same time span.

The team's goal this year is to win their ninth state title. "We expect to be the best team that Gloucester has ever had," head coach Melissa Bichao said. "But the competition is very tough this year."

For the 2007-08 year, the team has been focusing a lot more on conditioning. Kickboxing and running are part of the stiff training regimen Bichao has brought on them.

"We have been working out a lot this year," Bichao said. "We should be very well conditioned by the time we start our competitions."

In addition to the hard work that the team puts in for cheerleading, they put just as much effort into community service. This year the squad will be collecting toys and visiting patients at the Shriners Hospital. They are also collecting DVDs to send to the troops in Iraq. The team hopes to collect over 1,000 DVDs.
