METHUEN — Sam Prescott was all smiles Saturday afternoon and it was no wonder.

METHUEN — It was a long time coming but capturing the Division 1 state title at 145 pounds Saturday was worth the wait for Methuen senior Matt Cabezas Saturday afternoon.

BILLERICA  — Haverhill's wrestling team made history Wednesday night in impressive fashion.

The Hillies whipped Shawsheen Tech, which had been the No. 2 ranked team in the state, 49-27 to finish the season with a 21-0 perfect record. It's the first undefeated season in Haverhill history and the 21 wins is a school record.

Haverhill remained unbeaten (20-0), winning  four meets in a home super quad-meet, setting the stage for a huge showdown at Shawsheen Wednesday to close out the dual-meet season. Four Hillies went unbeaten on the day, the most impressive being Kevin Fuller (113), while sophomore Jackson DiFloures (145) had a terrific 3-1 day and recorded a pivotal decision in a 42-27 win over Brookline.

Haverhill's wrestling team remained unbeaten (16-0) with a 39-30 win over Dracut. The Hillies had five pins in the first period, the fastest being in 46 seconds by 120-pounder Dan Wezesa.

Haverhill continued knocking off challenges Saturday.

Unbeaten in dual meets, the Hillies captured their second tournament in two weeks with an impressive performance, placing first in the Capital Classic in Concord, N.H. The Hillies won with 171.5 points, just one ahead of Rhode Island power Bishop Hendricken.

Haverhill's wrestling team stayed unbeaten (15-0) with a 62-8 rout of Lowell. The Hillies had six pins, two forfeits and two major decisions in the win.

Haverhill continued its fine season by rolling to first in the 15-team Whitman-Hanson Tournament as Ben Davoli (106), Steven Wise (132), Jake Nicolosi (138), Sam Prescott (160) and Ryan McCartney (195) all captured individual titles with every match but one a pin.

LOWELL — Timberlane's wrestling team stood in third place Thursday after the first day of the George Bossi Lowell Holiday Tournament.

Surprising Springfield Central stands in first with 105 points followed by Concord (95), Timberlane (93.5) and Mount Anthony (90). Windham is in seventh and Pinkerton is eighth. The Astros, however, have the most quarterfinalists of any team with six.

On a team with a lot of wins, with several good individuals, it's somethimes tough to get the notice you deserve.

Such is the case for Haverhill junior Steven Wise, who was 35-12 last year and rarely got mentioned as one of the team's top wrestlers.
