They're back for Methuen

 

METHUEN — When finally given the chance, junior Matt Cabezas and senior Dan O'Connell delivered big time Saturday afternoon at the Division 1 North sectional.

Thwarted by injuries for two straight years, and knocked out Wednesday from a blow in his match against Central, O'Connell delivered a convincing 9-3 decision over Westford's Jake Morash for the 182-pound title.

First for Andover

 

Andover's wrestling team defeated Lawrence for the first time in its history, 33-32, to improve its record to 13-8. Heavyweight Payton Heidtke clinched the win with a 4-3 decision over Jon Velilla. Kevin Kiely had a 30-second pin for the Warriors.

Lawrence goes 1-2

 

Lawrence captured one of three meets in the Division 1 dual-meet tournament. Brian Perez was 2-0 on the day to pace the Lamcers. St. John's Prep finished third overall, beating Shawsheen 37-35 in the consolation finals North Andover's Zach Alexander was 3-0 at 138 for the Prep, which finished its dual season with a 30-5 record.

Rangers clinch share of MVC Large

Undefeated Methuen wrestling (19-0) took down rival Lawrence, 52-24, to clinch a share of the MVC Large title. Femi Marquis and Evan Stoddard each had first-period pins in 39 seconds, and freshman Joe Gangi avenged his Methuen Invitational loss to Luis Mauricio by earning a 5-3 decision over the Lawrence sophomore.

Knights come back

 

Trailing 36-0 to Lawrence, North Andover's wrestling team stormed back for a 69-12 victory over Lawrence. A key to the turnaround was at 106 when Kris Rhoton got a late pin after trailing 13-2. A late pin by Dan Wilkes at 126 was also vital for the Knights.

Lancers win 4 of 5

 

Lawrence got back on track by winning four of five meets and finishing second at the John Marshall Hall of Fame Duals in Merrimack, N.H. Sophomore Eric Sanchez won five times at 170 with five pins and freshman Devin Reynoso went 4-0 splitting between 106 and 113. Brandon Santell was 4-1 at heavyweight for the Lancers (13-8).

Lawrence goes 3-1

 

Lawrence had a bounce-back effort at the Chicopee Duals, winning three of four, after struggling mightily against Chelmsford. Sophomore 106-pounder Luis Mauricio was 3-1 and only lost to Lowell Holiday Tournament finalist Scott Downs of Winchester 8-6, heavyweight Brandon Santell was 4-0 with four pins and Michael Hernandez and Chris Bueno were also 4-0. Freshman first-year wrestler Jaycob Zapata was an impressive 3-1.
