North Reading rolls past Newburyport

NEWBURYPORT — The North Reading football team continued its four-game winning streak on Friday, downing Newburyport in convincing fashion, 32-13, on the road.

Newburyport took an early lead on a 32-yard touchdown by Myles Maloof after the Clippers recovered a Hornet fumble, but North Reading senior Alex D'Ambrosio got the ball on every play the subsequent drive, capping it off with an 18-yard catch. North Reading's extra point kick was blocked, but picked up and taken into the end zone to make it 8-7 North Reading.

North Reading rallies past Masco in OT

NORTH READING — Undermanned and undersized, the North Reading football team took down Masconomet, 20-14 in overtime on Friday night as the Hornets secured at least a share of the Cape Ann League Large title for the second straight season.
And they did so on the back of senior Jake Bedell.
With starting signal caller Jake Bythrow out of the line up, Bedell took the majority of snaps at quarterback, rushing the ball on 17 of the hosts’ 23 plays in the second half and overtime while running in for the game-tying touchdown in the fourth quarter.
“Jake’s a beast for us and we told him, ‘if you want to be a champion, take the game over. And he did’,” explained Hornets coach Jeff Wall, who said Bedell was a game-time decision because of a lower body injury.
“He watched guys in the past ... he learned from a good group of mentors.”
Bedell had 17 rushes on North Readings’s 23 plays in the second half and overtime, willing his squad to victory.
While it was Alex D’Ambrosio who rushed in from three yards out for the game-winner, every Masco defender followed Bedell when he faked the keeper, giving D’Ambrosio plenty of daylight to cross the goal line.
Both clubs are now 4-2.
The Chieftains (4-2) would get their shot after Bryce Wronski stuffed Bedell on the two-point try. But three straight incompletions after a first down run ended the contest.
