Relay thriller lifts Rangers

Trailing Billerica by three points heading into the final event, the 4x400 relay, Methuen's girls tracksters edged the Indians by one second to prevail with a 44-42 victory. Jenni Pappas gave the Rangers the lead with a strong third leg and Anne Bajor held on for the win.

Lawrence 43, Notre Dame 43

Victory by the relay team of Melanie Lilly, Kim Pham, Kayla Rodriguez and Giselle Munoz helped Lawrence pull even with Notre Dame of Tyngsboro, finishing in a 43-43 deadlock. Rodriguez also was victorious in the 2-mile (13:37.3) and Munoz was tops in the 600 (1:41.9) for the Lancers (0-4-1).

Sachem relays excel

Pentucket had a big day at the Divison 3 State Relays at the Reggie Lewis Center. Its 4x800 relay team of Rebecca Morse, Amy Babeu, April O'Brien and Alanna Poretta came in third in 9:52.85, missing a school record by two-tenths of a second. Also, the distance medley unit of O'Brien, Valerie Grim, Babeu and Poretta was fourth in 12:46.68, beating the school record by four seconds and qualifying them for the Nike nationals in March. Two other Sachem relays didn't qualify, but qualified for the state meet.

Stabile steps up for Hillies

Sam Stabile had a huge day for the Haverhill girls track team, winning the 50-yard dash (6.2) and high jump (4-9). The Hillies, now 4-0. took first in seven events as they dominated Lowell, 52-34. Lisa Betances had her best career throw by some 10 inches, tossing the shot put 34-11 3/4 for another Haverhill first place finish.

Bajor is brilliant for Rangers

Methuen fell to Tewksbury, 57-29, but senior Anne Bajor dominated once again. Bajor recorded one of two Rangers wins on the day as she took the 1,000 in 3:17.02. After missing part or all of the past two seasons with various leg injuries, Bajor has qualified for the state meet in three different events — 600, 1,000, mile — this season.

Long distance win

Colleen Shannon won the 1,000 in 2:55.3 as Andover topped Chelmsford 54-34. Maggie Mullins added to the dominance in the distance events, winning the mile in 5:38.2.

Jowetts lead Central past Lowell

The Central Catholic girls track team dominated Lowell, 65-21, thanks to a great combined effort from sisters Megan and Lanie Jowett. Megan took first in the 2-mile in 12:12.9, and younger sister Lanie won the 1,000 in 2:58.9. The Raiders had five other first place finishes, including Shelby White in the dash, Katie Lafrance in the hurdles, Stephanie Metayer in the mile, Lauren Berg in the shot put, and Kristen Wilson in the high jump.

Hillies by a nose

The showdown between the Haverhill and Andover girls lived up to its billing with the Hillies pulling out a 42-40 thriller.

Among a slew of fine performances for the Hillies were Sam Stabile winning the 400, Rebecca Stabile capturing the 600 and Alicia Fannon prevailed in the 2-mile. Andover received top efforts from Moira Cronin who edged Sam Stabile in the high jump and Colleen Shannon who was victorious in the 1,000.

Newburyport 45, North Reading 41

Newburyport edged out a strong North Reading team as Sara Tancreti (high hurdles), Kim Martins (2-mile), Hannah McCormick (600), Avery Cullinan (1000), Melissa Derrico (shot put), Kristin Cole (mile), and Caroline Barnaby all had first place finishes.

Pentucket got a nice come-from-behind tie against Ipswich as Bre Yocum (high jump, qualified for CALs), Sarah Pearsall (shot put), Amy Babeu (2-mile, qualified for states), April O'Brien (1000), and Alanna Poretta (mile) all had first place finishes. Additionally Sammy Morrow qualified for CALs in the 55m.
