Close call for North Reading

The North Reading girls volleyball team improved to 14-1 thanks to an impressive all-around performance by Adrianna Doyle (10 kills, 22 service points, three aces). Also doing some damage against Reading was Nicole Cecchini, who racked up a game-high 40 digs.

Kendra Hobbs led Whittier back from two games to take the match against Fellowship Christian 3-2. Hobbs put up 14 assists and 11 service points.

Salem 3, Timberlane 0

Winning without star
The Salem girls volleyball team somehow improved to 11-2 with a sweep of Timberlane despite missing two starters, including star captain Amanda Saab, who hurt her ankle in practice Friday. She joins Robyn Ciriello, who has been out with a back injury for a month and Courtney Wright, who has missed the entire season with a broken wrist.
Junior Becca Weiss led the way over Timberlane with 11 kills and nine service points.

Climbing the standings

Pinkerton volleyball bested previously-undefeated Spauliding  25-21, 19-25, 25-19, 25-16 to jump into second place in New Hampshire Division 1 standings. Kacie Connal registered 15 kills and eight blocks, while Meagan Farris had seven kills and 11 service points to lead the Astros (12-1), who trail only Nashua North (12-1).

The North Reading girls volleyball team recorded win No. 13 on the season, besting CAL rival North Andover 25-19, 25-20, 25-21. Nicole Cecchini (26 service points, five aces), Kirsten Morrison (10 kills) and Alison Friberg (29 assists) led the Hornets.

Whittier 3, Mystic Valley 1

Haverhill: Whittier Tech.'s, Samantha Dietrich knocks the ball down over the net in volleyball action against Mystic Valley. 2 Photos

In spite of losing the first set 22-25, the Whittier girls volleyball team stormed back to win the next three 25-6, 25-12, 25-18. Samantha Dietrich led the way with an astounding 24 service points, including 12 aces. She also added a team-high six kills, while Kendra Hobbs recorded 10 assists.

Only the best

Salem lost for the second time this season, but both losses have been to the cream of the crop. Yesterday, the Blue Devils fell to Spaulding (10-1 Division 1). Their first loss was to then-undefeated Pinkerton. Salem (10-2) was led again by Amanda Saab, who finished with 16 kills. Becca Weiss also contributed seven kills to go along with eight service points and 12 digs.

Performance of the day

Carolyn Eddy scored 20 service points and added 28 assists, both team highs, as Central Catholic downed rival Methuen 25-17, 27-25, 25-17 in a battle for two of the top teams in the MVC. Maggie Hillman added team highs in kills (10) and digs (21) for the Raiders (12-0-1). The Rangers fell 10-2.
