Robinson paves way for Haverhill victory

Sometimes, all that is needed for a team to generate a win is a standout performance by one key player. Taylor Robinson was that key player for Haverhill.

Despite playing some shaky defense, the Hillies topped Lynn English, 8-1, in the preliminary round of the Division 1 North Sectional.  Robinson led the way on the mound by tossing an 8-inning win on eight hits and five strikeouts. He also provided the bulk of the offense with a 3-run homer in the bottom of the third inning.

English nips Beverly

The Bulldogs scored three in the sixth to break a 1-1 tie and send the Panthers home disappointed with a 4-1 loss. Kiki McKenna drove in Kelly Shea | who had pinch run for Beth Cullen | to account for Beverly's run while Elise Perron pitched six innings and allowed just three hits while striking out five.

Reddy helps Salem drop English

Justin Williams shut down English with 2<2/3> scoreless innings of relief to save Salem's 4-3 win over the Bulldogs. Dan Reddy set the table for the Witches (9-6) with a 4 for 4 effort that included two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI as the co-captain was involved in three of his team's four runs. Colby Boulay and Beau Theriault also knocked in runs while Wes Koen earned the win on the hill with 4<1/3> innings of two hit work.

Chasse, Salem drop English

Freshman Sarah Chasse threw a complete game gem, allowing only one run and four hits, to stop the Bulldogs 2-1. Jen Nguyen scored on a Suzy Barnes single in the first and added an RBI single which brought Julia Jennings home in the second as the Witches (5-8) led 2-0 early and held on thanks to Chasse's effort and outstanding defense from shortstop Ashley White and second baseman Kelly McCarthy.

Moholland, Leonard spark Danvers

The Falcons (9-4) scored seven unanswered runs to erase a 2-0 deficit and trump Lynn English, 7-2. Caraline Moholland hit a two-run single in the third to jumpstart Danvers, which also saw Kim Leonard go 2 for 2 with three runs scored and Ashley Burnham score twice and drive in a run. Diana Bean added two hits and pitched 5<2/3>'s innings with three strikeouts.

Gloucester nears tourney berth with win

Gloucester (9-4) inched within one win of clinching a state tournament berth behind a strong effort from Jill Lukegord. Gloucester overpowered Lynn English 8-0.

The senior fired a shutout on the mound, striking out six and walking just one. She also added three hits at the plate, including two doubles.

Bulldogs' big inning dooms Witches

The Bulldogs plated four runs in the third inning and the Witches (1-2) could never climb out of the hole, falling 5-2. Aiden Church tripled and Harry Noone's sacrifice fly brought him home to give Salem a shortlived 1-0 lead and Matt Paine drove in a run in the fourth. Matt Bertone shined on the mound with four innings of two-hit relief work.

Peabody clinches first NEC title

Peabody is accustomed to winning the Greater Boston League title but now the girls can add an Northeastern Conference Large title as well.

Playing in the conference for the first year, the Tanners (12-2 in NEC, 13-3 overall) used their rebounding advantage to take a 48-45 victory on the road. Peabody outrebounded Lynn English by 20, 53-33.
