Michelle Manley, Magicians too much for Gloucester

Marblehead broke an early 1-1 tie with two quick goals to pull away from Gloucester 5-3. Michelle Manley paced the Magicians attack with a pair of goals and two assists while Tori Snow, Maggie McMullen and Stephanie Herbst also found the back of the net for Marblehead (1-0). Goaltender Libby Levine made 15 saves to collect her first win of the season.

Fishermen can't take underdog Magicians for granted

Tonight's Northeastern Conference matchup between Gloucester and Marblehead may not count toward a berth in the playoffs. But it still means a lot in the minds of the Fishermen and the Magicians.

That hunger should lead to an intense football game at Newell Stadium (7:45 p.m.), as both teams come in at 1-0, and both teams looked very impressive last week.

But in Gloucester's 4-0 victory over Saugus last night at Newell Stadium, that was not the case. The Fishermen defense stopped numerous second-half scoring chances for Saugus, and caught a few breaks to come away with the victory.

Gloucester set to gain redemption from Vikings

Tonight will be a strong indicator of whether or not there is going to be a changing of the guard in Northeastern Conference football this fall.

Over the past two years, Winthrop has been the premier team in the NEC, capturing conference crowns in 2005 and 2006. Last year's magical season featured a perfect 13-0 record and a Division 2A Super Bowl win.
